Recently I was also looking for the VIN of my smart car and found that the most common location is the lower left corner of the windshield. If you can't find it, open the passenger side door and check the metal plate on the door sill—it's also there. Oh, and sometimes there's a label on the floor of the trunk. I remember the inspector told me during the last annual check that if I really couldn't find it, I could check the insurance policy or vehicle registration certificate, as the number is clearly printed on both.
