BMW's fuse box is located under the steering wheel in the main driver's compartment. The working principle of a fuse is: when the circuit current exceeds twice the rated current of the fuse, it will blow within seconds to protect the circuit. BMW's models include: BMW X1, BMW 3 Series, BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7, etc. Taking the 2021 BMW X1 as an example, its body dimensions are: length 4565mm, width 1821mm, height 1620mm, with a wheelbase of 2780mm. The 2021 BMW X1 features a MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link independent rear suspension. It is equipped with a 1.5T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 140PS, a maximum torque of 220Nm, and a maximum power of 103kW, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Last year, I fixed the headlight issue on my old BMW 3 Series myself, and it took me a while to locate the fuse box. BMW's design is quite interesting—the location varies by model. For the older 3 Series E90, you just need to lift the right-side trim panel in the trunk to find the black fuse box cover. For the newer 5 Series G30, you have to open the glove compartment on the passenger side, where there are two clips at the top—remove them to reveal the blue-and-white labeled fuse box. For SUVs like the X5, it's even more hidden; you have to crouch near the passenger-side carpet to find the side panel. Honestly, I’d advise beginners not to force it open—BMW clips are quite fragile. Once you find it, use the white plastic clip on the back of the cover to remove the fuse, and make sure to turn off the engine and disconnect the power first. If the fuse is actually blown, I recommend going to a 4S店 to check for wiring issues, as regular repair shops might misdiagnose the problem.

As a BMW owner who frequently works with these vehicles, I've noticed their fuse box placement is quite deliberate. There's a small square cover near the windshield on the left side of the engine bay - that's the main fuse box. Behind the glove compartment on the passenger side, there's a smaller control module fuse box. For instance, when my friend's X3 suddenly had window failure, we found and replaced the corresponding fuse behind the glove box to fix it. Bring a flashlight when searching - especially for the fuse box on the right side of the trunk containing body control module fuses. Remember BMW uses color-coded fuses for different amperages: blue for 15A, yellow for 20A, etc. Once when my wiper fuse blew, I saved over 500 in labor costs by replacing it myself using the manual.

The fuse boxes in BMW models are typically located in three main areas. For sedans like the 3 Series and 5 Series, they are commonly found behind the right-side trunk trim panel—just lift the carpet to reveal a black box. In SUV models such as the X Series, the fuse box is usually located inside the side panel of the front passenger footwell area, sometimes requiring the removal of a decorative cover for access. Additionally, there is a main power fuse box in the upper left corner of the engine compartment near the wipers, easily identifiable by its bright red cover. When locating the fuse box, look for areas marked with circuit diagram symbols. Use a plastic clip to vertically pull out the fuse and check if it has blown. It is advisable to keep spare fuses of the correct amperage on hand. Note that working with live circuits carries risks, so always confirm the cause of the fault before replacing a fuse.
