Where is the ETC device number located?

The 6-digit ETC device number is also indicated on the installation form and can be seen on the front windshield. The purpose of the device number is to manage, maintain, pass through, troubleshoot, and deregister the ETC device. The highway operation system can query the operational status of the device through this code. ETC installation positions: For small vehicles such as cars and minivans, the ETC card and OBU device are installed in the upper middle part of the front windshield. For large vehicles like trucks and buses, the installation position is in the lower middle part. ETC installation position requirements: The height should be no less than 1.2 meters and no more than 2.5 meters; the installation angle N should be between 30º and 90º (the angle between the surface of the electronic tag and the horizontal plane). The installation process for the ETC device is as follows: Upon receiving the device, first check if the ETC card and electronic tag (OBU) are damaged. Press the anti-tamper button on the back of the OBU, and the red light will briefly turn on. The OLED screen will display "Tag Invalid" or "Please Insert Card," indicating the device is functioning normally. Clean the front windshield to ensure the surface is smooth, clean, and dry. Then peel off the adhesive backing film of the OBU and stick it to the installation position. Press firmly with your hand for 2-3 minutes to remove any air bubbles. Insert the ETC card with the front facing the driver and the back facing the front windshield, ensuring the chip is inserted into the OBU device.
As a long-time car owner, I remember the ETC device number is usually printed on the back or side of the tag, clearly visible before installation—just lift it to check. If it's already mounted on the windshield, gently pry the edge with your finger; most markings are quite prominent. If you can't find it, don't rush to rummage through everything—the ETC management app on your phone can display it too. Just log into your account and navigate to the device details page for a clear view. This number is incredibly useful, required when topping up a new card or activating services, as the system won't recognize your vehicle without it. Occasionally, if the device malfunctions, I use this number to call customer service for resolution, saving a wasted trip to the toll booth. A quick reminder: avoid exposing it publicly to prevent malicious use of your account for unauthorized charges. Also, regularly check that the device is securely attached to avoid signal loss from detachment during high-speed driving.
