Where is the Car's Air Filter Located?

The location of a car's air filter element varies depending on the intake form and engine structure. It is generally located in the air cleaner on the engine's intake pipe. There are two types of air filters in cars: dry and wet. Dry filters are made of paper or organic materials, while wet filters are made of metal mesh. The air filter should be replaced every 10,000 to 20,000 kilometers or during each maintenance interval. However, it is recommended to clean the air filter every 5,000 kilometers to reduce the formation of throttle sludge. Function of the air filter: It filters out particulate impurities in the air, ensuring that sufficient clean air enters the cylinders and preventing floating dust in the air from being sucked into the engine, which accelerates wear on the piston group and cylinders. Air filter: It is a type of filter, also known as an air filter cartridge, air cleaner, or style. It is mainly used in engineering vehicles, cars, agricultural vehicles, laboratories, sterile operating rooms, and various precision operating rooms as an air filter. During operation, the engine inhales a large amount of air. If the air is not filtered, the suspended dust in the air will be sucked into the cylinders, accelerating the wear of the piston group and cylinders. Larger particles entering between the piston and cylinder can cause severe cylinder scoring, especially in dry and sandy working environments. The air cleaner is installed in front of the carburetor or intake pipe to filter out dust and sand particles from the air, ensuring that sufficient and clean air enters the cylinders. Dirty air cleaner: Using an excessively dirty air cleaner while driving can cause insufficient engine intake, incomplete fuel combustion, leading to unstable engine operation, reduced power, and increased fuel consumption. Therefore, the car's air cleaner must be kept clean. The car's air cleaner is a device that removes particulate impurities from the air, consisting of one or several air filter components. Its main function is to filter out harmful impurities in the air before it enters the cylinders, reducing early wear on the cylinders, pistons, piston rings, valves, and valve seats. Therefore, before air enters the cylinders, it must be finely filtered by the air cleaner. A dirty air cleaner can cause poor engine performance, excessive fuel consumption, and engine damage. When inspecting the air cleaner, if it is found to have little dust and is lightly clogged, it can be cleaned with high-pressure air from the inside out and reused. Excessively dirty air filters should be replaced promptly.
Where is the air filter located? That's a great question. I often help others with car repairs and maintenance. The air filter is usually placed inside the air filter housing in the engine compartment, with its exact position varying by model: in sedans, it's typically on the left front side of the engine, while in SUVs, it might be hidden near the wheel arch. After opening the hood, you'll see a plastic square box—just unclip the fasteners to find it. I always advise beginners to check the vehicle's user manual first to avoid damaging the housing while fumbling around. The filter's job is to trap dust and protect the engine from contamination. During self-inspection, if it appears black or clogged with debris, it's time for a replacement. Regular replacement improves fuel efficiency, saves gas, and extends engine life—generally recommended every 10,000 km or once a year. It's an easy DIY task: buy the right model online for a few dozen yuan, and it takes just about ten minutes. Neglecting this small task could lead to sluggish performance and skyrocketing repair costs, which isn't worth it.
