Where is the BMW light sensor located?

BMW light sensor is located in front of the interior rearview mirror. Function of light sensor: By measuring the intensity of solar "thermal radiation", the light sensor transmits the collected signal (light intensity signal) to the main control ECU (control unit) or air conditioning control ECU (depending on the model). The ECU control unit comprehensively compares, calculates, and judges the intensity of sunlight and ambient (indoor/outdoor) temperature signals, then accurately calculates a more reasonable indoor environmental temperature (increase or decrease). Thereby controlling "wind speed" (intensity) or "wind direction" to automatically adjust the air conditioning for optimal thermal comfort. Other uses of light sensor: As a time display - with increasingly advanced automotive technology focusing more on environmental protection and energy efficiency, the light sensor signal can be converted into a digital circuit signal and then into time (clock). This is a technology already in use today and will be widely adopted in the future. Currently, it can be seen in many mid-range, high-end, and imported models.
Last time I took my BMW in for maintenance, the technician specifically pointed out the location of the light sensor to me. It's hidden in the middle area at the very top edge of the windshield, right next to the base of the rearview mirror, looking like a small black dot-shaped sensor. This inconspicuous little thing is actually crucial - it's responsible for sensing light changes so the headlights automatically turn on when driving into tunnels during daytime. I remember last winter when heavy snow covered the sensor with frost on the windshield, the automatic headlight function completely failed. It's recommended to pay special attention to cleaning that spot when wiping the windshield, and to avoid applying heat insulation film there. Otherwise, the headlights might keep turning on unnecessarily during daytime, wasting battery and disturbing other drivers.
