Starting from July 1, 2020, Xiamen will implement China 6 emission standards for light-duty vehicles. Here are the relevant details: According to the schedule, the China 6 emission standards will be implemented in two phases, 6a and 6b. Light-duty vehicles will implement the 6a standard from July 1, 2020, and the 6b standard from July 1, 2023. All motor vehicles produced, imported, or sold in Xiamen must comply with the requirements of each phase. Otherwise, they will not pass the pre-approval environmental review by the ecological environment department and cannot be registered with the traffic police department.
I remember that Xiamen fully implemented the China VI-b emission standard starting from July 1, 2020, in line with national policy. From then on, all newly purchased gasoline vehicles had to meet this standard, and China V vehicles could no longer be registered. This policy was mainly aimed at reducing exhaust pollution and improving air quality. As a tourist city, Xiamen particularly needed this, for example, to reduce the damage of smog to attractions like Gulangyu Island. After implementation, the entire vehicle registration and sales process changed, and everyone had to be careful not to buy vehicles with the old standard, otherwise, there would be trouble with licensing. From personal experience, news reports remind me that environmental protection is becoming increasingly strict, which is quite important for long-term urban development and public health, especially when there is heavy traffic on the roads.
