When will China 6 be implemented?

China 6 is divided into two standards. Each has its own implementation time, which are: 1. China 6a. From July 1, 2020, light-duty vehicles will be required to comply with the China 6a emission standard. 2. China 6b. From July 1, 2023, light-duty vehicles will be required to comply with the China 6b emission standard. However, many provinces and cities have already implemented it ahead of schedule. The implementation time may vary depending on local regulations: Guangzhou: Light-duty vehicles will implement China 6 from January 1, 2019. Jiangsu: All gasoline supplied will meet China 6 standards starting from October 1, 2018. Guangdong: China 6 will be implemented from July 1, 2019, and China 6 diesel has already been launched. Shandong: The China 6 emission standard for motor vehicles will be implemented province-wide from July 1, 2019. Shenzhen: China 6 will be fully implemented from January 2019, and fuel vehicles with emissions below this standard will be restricted from sale, purchase, and road use.
I remember when I was planning to change my car last year, I specifically researched the implementation timeline of China 6 emission standards. Nationwide, the China 6a standard was fully implemented starting from July 2020, which strengthened emission controls for light-duty gasoline vehicles, such as requiring a 50% reduction in carbon monoxide emissions. Then in July 2023, it was upgraded to the stricter China 6b phase, with even more stringent limits. Here in Shenzhen, we started early in 2019. This has had a significant impact on us car owners—new vehicles must meet the standards to be registered, and the resale value of older models has dropped. At the time, I opted for an electric vehicle, which was a one-step solution to avoid annual inspection issues. Now, I pay more attention to road signs to ensure my vehicle is environmentally compliant. The air quality has indeed improved a bit after the policy was implemented.
