When is the Right Time to Shift Gears in a Manual Transmission?
1 Answers
In a manual transmission, gear selection depends on vehicle speed. You must start in 1st gear when driving. Between 10-20 km/h, either 1st or 2nd gear can be used. For speeds between 20-30 km/h, 2nd or 3rd gear is appropriate. Between 30-40 km/h, use 3rd or 4th gear. For 40-50 km/h, 4th or 5th gear is suitable. Above 50 km/h, use 5th gear. As speed increases, shift to higher gears accordingly. Shifting Precautions: Before upshifting, you must first accelerate to reach the appropriate speed for the next higher gear, then promptly engage that higher gear. Shifting Timing: Upshifting generally occurs when needing to accelerate during steady driving - shift immediately when speed or RPM increases, performing the action smoothly and quickly. When decelerating, brake promptly and shift into the gear matching your current speed.
