Saturn stopped making cars in 2009. The final model year for any Saturn vehicle was 2010, but production of all models ceased entirely in October 2009. This marked the end of the brand after General Motors (GM) failed to sell it to Penske Automotive Group and subsequently phased it out as part of its post-bankruptcy restructuring.
The shutdown was a multi-year process. GM had already begun discontinuing models before the final year. The Saturn Sky roadster and the European-designed Saturn Astra were among the first to be cut. By the 2010 model year, the only vehicles left were the Saturn Outlook, Vue, and Aura, with production halting for good in the fall of 2009.
The collapse of the deal with Penske was the final nail in the coffin. Penske had planned to purchase the brand and have another manufacturer build cars badged as Saturns. When that agreement fell through, GM had no viable plan to continue the "different kind of car company," leading to its official demise.
