Cadillac uses 5W30 or 5W40 engine oil. Engine oil types for other models: For example, Cadillac XT6, XT5, and XT4 use 5W40 engine oil, while Cadillac CT6, CT5, and CT4 use 5W30 engine oil. Car owners can comprehensively consider factors such as the model they use, driving habits, and driving conditions to choose the appropriate engine oil. Engine oil replacement time: The time for engine oil replacement can be determined based on the type of oil used. Generally, if fully synthetic oil is used, it can be replaced within 10,000 kilometers or one year. If semi-synthetic oil is used, it should be replaced within 7,500 kilometers or 6 to 8 months.

My Cadillac XT5 has always been serviced with 0W-20 full synthetic oil at the dealership, claiming that the GM-approved dexos1 specification is the most suitable. Recently, I checked the manual myself and found that different engines indeed have varying requirements. The 2.0T engine with cylinder deactivation in the XT4 also uses 0W-20, but the older ATS’s 2.0T actually recommends 5W-30. For hybrid models, special attention must be paid to hybrid-specific oil—my friend’s CT6 hybrid threw a fault code after using the wrong oil. I recommend checking the last chapter of the owner’s manual first; the sticker will specify the exact standards. Nowadays, most new models require oil with either dexos1 or dexos2 certification.

Repair shops have seen too many cases of Cadillacs using the wrong engine oil. For engines with cylinder deactivation like the CT5, low-ash SP-grade 0W-20 oil must be used, otherwise it can easily clog the particulate filter. However, the older STS 3.0 naturally aspirated engine is more suitable with 5W-30. The key is to look at the engine code: new LYX/LSY engines use 0W-20, while LTG engines use 5W-30. Look for the dexos certification mark on the oil container - it's more reliable than just looking at viscosity. In areas with winter temperatures below -20°C, 0W series oil should be used for better cold start protection.

Just had maintenance done on my Cadillac CT4. The specialist emphasized three key points: must use full synthetic oil with GM dexos1 Gen3 certification, and the new 2.0T engines uniformly require 0W-20 viscosity. Specifically warned against blindly trusting premium brand oils - some European-certified oils exceed phosphorus limits and can damage catalytic converters. Different models have recommended grades on fuel filler caps, but the most accurate source is the repair manual. A friend at Cadillac dealership says current manufacturer training requires using Mobil 1 EP series, as its extended performance best suits vehicles with frequent start-stop systems.
