KITT is a heavily modified 1982 Firebird Trans Am, a classic American muscle car transformed into a fictional, technologically advanced vehicle for the television series Knight Rider. The production team used approximately two dozen 1982 Pontiac Trans Ams to create the various KITT models seen on screen, with stunt cars powered by standard production engines like the 5.0L V8 or 3.8L turbocharged V6. Its enduring design blends period-specific automotive style with a futuristic aesthetic defined by custom modifications.
The car’s defining visual feature was its front-mounted pulsating red scanner light, housed within a custom black front bumper assembly. Inside, the factory dashboard was completely replaced with a custom console featuring an array of multi-colored, non-functional electronic panels and the famous voice interface represented by the oscillating red light. This iconic interior became synonymous with the car’s sentient AI personality.
While portrayed as nearly indestructible, the reality for the show's fleet was different. The "molecular bonded shell" was a fictional concept; the actual cars were standard production vehicles that sustained significant damage during stunt filming. According to automotive historical records and the Knight Rider Historians, most of the cars were destroyed or severely damaged by the series' end, with only a few restored examples preserved in museums and private collections today.
The vehicle's on-screen fictional capabilities far exceeded its real-world mechanics. Scripted features included autonomous self-driving, a turbo boost for jumping obstacles, and an array of defensive and surveillance gadgets. In reality, these effects were achieved through camera tricks, scale models, and careful editing. The contrast between its real-world 1980s GM underpinnings and its sci-fi persona is central to its lasting appeal.
