What to Do When Your Driver's License Expires in Another City?

If your driver's license expires while you're in another city, you can apply for a replacement license there. You can apply for a renewal of your motor vehicle driver's license within 90 days before its expiration date. If you've already exceeded the expiration date and haven't had a chance to renew it, don't worry. As long as it hasn't been more than one year past the expiration date, you can still apply for a renewal at the vehicle management office where your original driver's license was issued. A driver's license, also known as a driving permit, is a document issued by the government's transportation department to individuals who are qualified to drive, usually in the form of a card. To obtain a driver's license, you need to meet the minimum age requirement and pass a driving test. The license typically specifies the types of motor vehicles the holder is allowed to drive, such as motorcycles, cars, trucks, buses, etc.
Renewing your driver's license in a different location is actually quite simple. Last time when I was working in Shenzhen, I renewed it directly through the Traffic Management 12123 APP. First, I went to a designated local hospital for a basic physical examination, and the hospital automatically uploaded the medical report. On the APP, I clicked 'Renewal upon Expiry', uploaded a white-background ID photo taken within the last six months, and chose to have the new license mailed to my address. The whole process took just half a day. Remember, for out-of-town renewal, you can start the process up to three months in advance. If it's overdue by more than a year, you'll have to retake the written test. You can also handle it in person at the local vehicle management office—just bring your ID card, old driver's license, and medical examination form.
