What to Do When the Fuel Pump Shuts Off Before the Tank is Full?

If the fuel pump shuts off before the tank is full, simply loosen the nozzle slightly and continue refueling. The fuel nozzle has a sensor at its tip that automatically shuts off when it comes into contact with fuel to prevent overflow. If the nozzle is pressed too tightly during refueling, the fuel flows rapidly, causing it to splash up and trigger the sensor, resulting in premature shutoff. The fuel nozzle is the terminal part of the fuel dispenser at gas stations, which connects to the vehicle's fuel tank. Commonly used types include self-sealing nozzles and composite nozzles. Once activated, the nozzle's handle opens, allowing fuel to flow through the main valve orifice, passing through the venturi tube, outlet valve, and nozzle tube before being dispensed. During refueling, the rapid flow of fuel through the venturi tube creates a low-pressure zone in the sealed cavity between the venturi tube and the secondary valve seat, directing airflow through the air passage to the nozzle's front-end air vent and into the upper chamber of the automatic control diaphragm.
