What to Do When the Corolla ECO Light Comes On?

When the ECO indicator light on the car illuminates, it indicates that the vehicle's economy mode is activated. ECO is an English abbreviation derived from Ecology (environmental protection), Conservation (energy saving), and Optimization (power). The Eco mode is further divided into active Eco driving mode and passive Eco driving mode. Eco mode is categorized into active and passive types, with the difference being that the active type has its own dedicated button, allowing the driver to choose whether to activate it. When the driver presses the Eco mode switch, the dashboard indicator light immediately turns on, and the vehicle automatically begins adjusting settings such as throttle opening, transmission shift logic, and air conditioning output power. The passive Eco mode does not have a dedicated button. When the dashboard ECO indicator light comes on, it serves merely as a reminder function. The Eco system automatically evaluates your driving behavior; if your current driving operation achieves the optimal fuel supply, the dashboard will simultaneously display the ECO indicator light. Most vehicles employ the active Eco driving mode, meaning they have a standalone switch button. Therefore, during daily driving, the Eco mode can be activated. However, it is unnecessary to enable Eco mode when driving at speeds exceeding 120 km/h, during idle parking, in N/P gear, or in manual mode—especially when climbing hills. Doing so would not only fail to showcase the fuel-saving characteristics of Eco mode but also impair vehicle performance. Additionally, the Eco mode typically deactivates under the following circumstances: When the vehicle speed exceeds 120 kilometers per hour, the car prioritizes speed, causing the Eco mode to automatically deactivate. During idle parking or when in N/P gear or manual mode, the Eco mode may also deactivate. When high torque output is required, such as during hill climbing, the engine's computer prioritizes ensuring sufficient power to drive the vehicle, and the Eco mode will not operate.
Last time when I was driving my Corolla on the highway, the ECO light suddenly stayed on continuously, which really startled me and made me look up information immediately. This light is actually just a fuel-efficient driving reminder assistant - when illuminated, it indicates you're currently pressing the accelerator gently. If it stays constantly on without turning off, don't panic - first check the road conditions. If it lights up while going uphill, the engine might be struggling, so just shift to S mode and downshift. If it lights up on flat roads, I usually roll down the windows for ventilation or turn off the AC and drive for a couple minutes - sometimes it returns to normal. If it stays on continuously for three or four days, there's an 80% chance the throttle body is dirty and needs cleaning - last time I spent over 200 yuan at the 4S shop to get it fixed. Here's another little trick: after turning off the engine, restart while pressing the accelerator pedal firmly twice - occasionally this can reset the system.
