What to Do When the Air-Fuel Ratio Is Incorrect?

A clogged air filter obstructs the intake passage, reducing air intake and causing the mixture to become too rich. The solution is to clean the air filter. A worn fuel injector fails to close properly, leading to fuel dripping and an overly rich mixture. The solution is to replace the fuel injector. A faulty fuel pressure regulator causes excessively high system fuel pressure. Similarly, air leaks or poor intake in the injector or insufficient fuel pressure can be resolved by replacing the fuel valve. A dirty or malfunctioning mass air flow sensor or degraded catalytic converter performance can often be attributed to poor fuel quality. The solution is to clean the mass air flow sensor.
