What to Do When Coolant Is Insufficient?

When the coolant level is too low, it should be replenished promptly. When the engine is cool, open the coolant reservoir directly and add coolant until the level is between the upper and lower marks. Coolant consists of three parts: water, antifreeze, and additives. Depending on the antifreeze component, it can be classified into types such as alcohol-based, glycerol-based, and ethylene glycol-based. Precautions for coolant replacement: 1. Do not mix different types: Different models of antifreeze should not be mixed. If replacing the coolant, try to flush the system clean before adding new coolant. 2. Do not add water for a long time: Temporarily adding water is acceptable, but long-term addition is definitely not advisable. 3. Do not open the cap rashly: When the radiator is boiling, do not open the cap hastily. Once the radiator boils, the temperature inside is very high, and the pressure is great. Opening the radiator cap may cause boiling water and steam to spray out rapidly, leading to burns.
Noticing a low coolant level is indeed something to take seriously. I usually start by assessing how urgent the situation is. If the level is near the minimum mark but still visible, first ensure the engine is completely cool—wait about half an hour after parking. Then carefully open the overflow tank cap and top it up with the same type of antifreeze to the maximum line. However, if the level is so low it's invisible, or if it's been dropping frequently recently, there might be a leak in the radiator, water pump, or hoses. Last time I encountered this, I temporarily added some distilled water as an emergency measure to drive to the repair shop—remember, never use tap water, as mineral deposits can clog the cooling system. After topping up, monitor the level closely for several days. If it continues to drop, get a thorough inspection of the hoses and gaskets immediately to avoid overheating and breaking down mid-drive. Make it a habit to check the coolant monthly, especially before long trips, and replace old, murky antifreeze promptly to protect the entire cooling system.
