What to Do If the Driver's License Is Not Renewed in Time?

If the driver's license has been expired for less than 12 months, it can be renewed as usual. If it has been expired for more than one year but less than three years, you will need to retake the subject one exam to renew the license. Once you pass the exam, you can get your driver's license. If the license has been expired for more than three years, you will need to reapply for the driver's license exam.
Last time, I only realized my driver's license had expired four months later, which really freaked me out. I rushed to the DMV and found out that as long as it's within one year of expiration, I could just renew it directly. All I needed was my ID card, old driver's license, medical exam report, and a one-inch white-background photo. That day, I took the vision and blood pressure test at the self-service medical exam machine in the DMV, borrowed a white shirt at the photo booth, and got my new license in two hours. The staff told me that if it's been over one year but less than three years, I'd have to retake the written test on traffic regulations. The worst case is if it's expired for more than three years—the entire license becomes invalid, and you'd have to re-enroll in driving school from scratch. Remember, the expiration date is printed on the back of your license, and you can renew it up to three months in advance.
