The engine oil with the grade 20W50 is an all-season oil that can be used year-round, but it depends on the local winter and summer temperatures. However, such high-viscosity oil is rarely used in the market today, and most of this type of oil is semi-synthetic or mineral oil. Given the importance of engine oil to the engine, more and more people are pursuing fully synthetic oil and lower-viscosity oil. 20W50 oil can be used at a minimum temperature of -15°C, and its high-temperature viscosity of 50 can meet the engine's requirements in summer across China. Therefore, in southern China, 20W50 oil is considered all-season oil and can be used year-round. However, in northern China, it is not suitable for all seasons because winter temperatures there can drop below -15°C, which may cause issues like engine failure to start. Thus, this oil cannot be used in northern China during winter. Therefore, regarding the season for using 20W50 oil, it is suitable for summer across China, but in winter, it can only be used in southern China. In the viscosity grade, the number before 'W' represents the oil's viscosity in low-temperature conditions. The smaller the number, the better the fluidity and cold resistance. The number after 'W' indicates the oil's viscosity at 100°C, with a higher number representing higher viscosity and better high-temperature resistance. Apart from the numbers before and after 'W,' other parameters can also classify the oil. For example, 'S' at the beginning indicates oil for gasoline engines, 'C' for diesel engines, and the presence of both 'S' and 'C' means the oil is suitable for both gasoline and diesel engines. When selecting engine oil, consider the following: Choose oil based on the engine's requirements. There is no need to use overly advanced oil for engines with lower requirements, nor should lower-grade oil be used in engines with higher requirements. Multi-grade oil is preferable as it is economical, long-lasting, and efficient, providing better protection for the engine. Due to its characteristics, multi-grade oil may appear darker and have lower oil pressure than regular oil during use, which is normal.

20W-50 motor oil is most suitable for use in warm seasons, especially during summer or in hot climates. The first part of this grade, 20W, represents its low-temperature performance in winter, indicating that it flows reasonably well during cold starts. However, the latter part, 50, indicates higher high-temperature viscosity, which provides better protection for the engine in high-temperature environments, such as extreme heat, preventing the oil from thinning and reducing wear. When I used to drive an older car, I often switched to this oil in the summer, and it made the engine run more smoothly while maintaining stable fuel consumption. It's not highly recommended for extremely cold winters, as it may flow poorly at very low temperatures, leading to difficult starts or accelerated wear. If you live in a consistently warm area, such as southern cities, using it year-round isn’t a major issue. Still, it's best to follow the vehicle manual's recommendations when selecting oil and regularly check the oil level and color to ensure engine health.

Why Can't the Steering Wheel Turn When the Car is Cold?

Cold weather causing the steering wheel to be difficult to turn is primarily due to the use of hydraulic power steering systems in most vehicles. At low temperatures, the power steering fluid becomes more viscous, leading to this situation, which is normal. There are two types of hydraulic power steering systems: one is the electro-hydraulic power steering system, and the other is the mechanical hydraulic power steering system. The power steering pump in an electro-hydraulic system is driven by an electric motor, whereas in a mechanical hydraulic system, it is directly driven by the engine. The mechanical hydraulic power steering system consumes engine power, while the electro-hydraulic system does not. Both types of hydraulic power steering systems require the use of power steering fluid, which needs to be replaced regularly. Failure to replace the fluid over an extended period can result in the car's steering wheel becoming heavier.

What Causes the Engine Malfunction Light to Stay On?

The engine malfunction light may stay on due to the following 7 main reasons: Sensor failure: The sensors mentioned here include the water temperature sensor, crankshaft position sensor, air flow sensor, intake air temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, etc. When these sensors are damaged, have poor contact, or experience signal interruption, the car's ECU cannot accurately obtain engine data, which will trigger the engine malfunction light. Fuel or oil quality issues: If fuel or engine oil is not added as required by the manufacturer, it may cause engine wear and trigger the malfunction light. Poor combustion of the air-fuel mixture: Poor combustion can lead to engine carbon buildup or knocking. When detected by the oxygen sensor and reported to the ECU, the malfunction light will illuminate as a warning. Issues such as spark plug failure, ignition coil failure, fuel pump failure, or clogged fuel lines can all cause poor combustion of the air-fuel mixture. Turbocharger issues: The intake boost pipeline or turbocharger can also cause the engine malfunction light to come on. The most common issue is turbocharger damage, accompanied by symptoms such as oil leaks, high oil consumption, reduced power, metallic noises, or blue/black smoke from the exhaust pipe. Intake issues: If there are problems with the car's intake system, it may lead to engine pipeline blockages, and in severe cases, trigger the engine malfunction light. A dirty air filter that is not cleaned regularly can cause intake problems. Exhaust issues: Exhaust system failures can also trigger the engine malfunction light. Common causes include rear oxygen sensor failure, catalytic converter failure, exhaust camshaft and bearing failure, with the catalytic converter being the most frequent issue. The use of leaded gasoline, lead or silicon-based lubricant additives, physical damage to the catalytic converter, or fuel system failures can easily cause catalytic converter problems. Anti-theft system failure: If the car's electronic anti-theft system malfunctions or if the anti-theft controller does not match the engine electronic controller, the anti-theft system can prevent the engine from operating normally and trigger the engine malfunction light. If the engine malfunction light is on, follow these steps: First, check if the engine is running normally and whether there are issues such as shaking or smoke. If so, avoid restarting the engine. Note: Do not restart the engine if the red light is on. If the engine can start, turn it off and wait 5-10 minutes. Without pressing the brake, press the start button once or turn the key halfway to the "ON" position without pressing the clutch. The car will enter self-diagnosis mode after powering on. Wait 5-10 seconds and observe whether the malfunction light on the dashboard turns off. If the malfunction light remains on, visit a service station as soon as possible. The service station can use a portable diagnostic tool to read the fault code, identify the issue, and perform targeted repairs.

How often should a passenger car be inspected?

A passenger car should be inspected once every 2 years within the first 6 years; once every year after exceeding 6 years; and once every 6 months after exceeding 15 years. The contents of the annual inspection include: 1. Whether the vehicle has a user manual and a certificate of conformity, and whether the factory sample marks on the vehicle body are complete; 2. Measuring the internal and external contour dimensions, wheelbase, and axle base of the motor vehicle, with specific measurement items including vehicle length, width, height, cargo compartment side height and area, wheelbase, and axle base; 3. Conducting inspections item by item according to technical inspection standards. After passing, fill out the motor vehicle initial inspection variation registration form, and record the unladen weight, load capacity, number of passengers, and number of occupants in the cab as specified by the manufacturer.
