The Multivan is a high-end MPV model under Volkswagen, mainly used for high-end business receptions, and is an imported vehicle.

Speaking of the Multivan, my neighbor actually owns one. This van has quite a distinctive presence in China, especially with its boxy design. The common models are the T5 and T6 series, with the earlier T5 being more prevalent, available in both standard wheelbase and the extended Multivan Long versions. In the current used car market, you’ll mostly find T6 models from around 2019, with the 4WD version called the Multivan Explorer Edition, featuring rugged roof racks and upscale wood interior trim. The newly released T6.1 version this year got a redesigned front fascia and a fully digital instrument cluster for a more tech-savvy feel. By the way, there’s also a pure family-oriented variant called the Caravelle, which is essentially a stripped-down version of the Multivan with basic third-row bench seating.

In terms of models, the domestic market mainly sells five generations: the early imported T3 (rare), the T4 around 2003 (classic square headlight version), the T5 (2009 model with Sharan face and later minor facelift), the T6 (2016 model), and the upgraded T6.1 in 2020. All are powered by a 2.0TSI engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, with the top trim featuring 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Seating layouts include 7-seat and 9-seat versions, with the third row capable of rotating to face each other. Safety features are solid, with a multi-collision braking system standard across the lineup. If buying now, it's recommended to look for later T6 models, as the DSG transmission stability is much better than earlier versions, with used prices around 200,000 to 300,000 RMB.

We veteran car enthusiasts miss the original T1 Microbus the most, though nowadays the Multivan mainly refers to the T-series commercial vehicles. Last month, I accompanied a friend to pick up a 2020 T6.1 4Motion Exclusive edition, which cost nearly 600,000 RMB out the door. The foldable tables inside are the essence—they can be combined to form a meeting room. The dual electric sliding doors with touchless opening are super convenient when carrying kids onboard. Actually, the main difference between the Multivan and Caravelle lies in the configurations: the Multivan features independent airline-style second-row seats with leg rests, while the Caravelle has standard bench seating. In terms of classic status, the 2010 T5 4WD models hold their value best—the Dynaudio sound system and refrigerator still represent the pinnacle of business reception specs today.
