When driving on the highway at night, it is advisable to use high beams. This is because streetlights on highways are generally not very dense, making it difficult to clearly see the road conditions. Additionally, the illumination range of low beams is only about 30 meters. Given the high speeds on highways, if there is an obstacle ahead, the driver would have very little time to react within such a short distance, which could easily lead to an accident. High beams provide a visibility range of approximately 100 meters, giving the driver more reaction time in case of sudden situations. However, it is not advisable to keep the high beams on all the time. If the distance to the vehicle ahead is less than 100 meters, it is best to switch from high beams to low beams. There are many tunnels on highways, and there is no need to use high beams when passing through them as the lighting inside tunnels is usually very bright.
For high-speed night driving, I highly recommend using high beams because they illuminate a greater distance, helping you see the road conditions ahead in advance. However, this is only suitable for open road sections. If there is a vehicle ahead or oncoming traffic in the opposite lane, you must immediately switch back to low beams to avoid dazzling others, otherwise it can easily cause serious accidents. Safety is the most important consideration. Additionally, I make it a habit to maintain a following distance of at least 100 meters, especially at night when visibility is poor, leaving enough space is crucial. In bad weather conditions such as rain or fog, high beams are less effective as the light can reflect and reduce visibility. In such cases, you should switch to low beams along with fog lights. Before every trip, I always check if the headlights are functioning properly, ensuring the bulbs and wiring are intact to avoid any issues on the highway.
