What Letter Represents the Forward Gear in an Automatic Transmission?

In an automatic transmission, the forward gear is represented by the letter D, also known as the overdrive gear, which can automatically shift up to the fourth gear. If you feel the car is going too fast when driving downhill, you can shift out of the D gear. An automatic transmission eliminates the need for the driver to manually shift gears, as the vehicle automatically selects the appropriate gear based on driving speed and traffic conditions. Generally, an automatic transmission car has six gear positions, arranged from top to bottom as follows: P, R, N, D, S, and L. P stands for Parking gear or Start gear; when the car is parked and not in use, this gear locks the wheels mechanically to prevent rolling. R is the Reverse gear. N is the Neutral gear, used for temporary parking. S stands for Sport mode; when this gear is engaged, the transmission can switch gears freely. L is the Low gear, which allows the car to use engine power for braking when going downhill.
