DCT stands for Dual Clutch Transmission, which is a product developed based on manual transmission. The structure of this transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission. DCT Transmission: The main body of the DCT transmission is a manual transmission, and it can also be considered an upgraded version of the manual transmission. The DCT transmission has two sets of clutches, primarily responsible for shifting odd-numbered gears and even-numbered gears (including neutral gear), respectively. During operation, these two sets of clutch plates alternate to complete the tasks of upshifting and downshifting for the DCT transmission. DCT transmission generates a significant amount of heat: During the shifting process, the friction plates of the two clutches generate a large amount of heat due to extensive friction. Especially when driving in congested urban areas, frequent stop-and-go conditions occur, leading to a higher frequency of gear shifts. As a result, the vehicle's transmission clutches need to work continuously, causing the DCT transmission to produce a substantial amount of heat.
W D C T stands for Wet Dual-Clutch Transmission, commonly abbreviated as Wet DCT. I'm most familiar with this from my own driving experience—it's an automatic transmission particularly well-suited for high-performance vehicles. It uses oil to cool the clutch plates, preventing the overheating issues common with dry versions. Compared to dry DCTs, the wet type offers faster and smoother gear shifts during aggressive driving because the oil absorbs and dissipates heat, ensuring no jerks or hesitations even during prolonged mountain driving or rapid acceleration for overtaking. Additionally, it operates quietly and boasts excellent durability. I experienced this firsthand driving a Volkswagen Golf—gear changes were seamless and fuel-efficient. However, it has notable drawbacks, such as being heavier and more expensive. Overall, wet DCTs are especially popular in sports cars and SUVs, and I'd recommend them to enthusiasts who enjoy dynamic driving.
