Independent suspension consists of elastic elements, guiding mechanisms, and shock absorbers, with some structures also including buffer blocks and anti-roll bars. Advantages of independent suspension: Since it adopts a split axle design, it can lower the height of the engine and the entire vehicle floor; it allows for greater wheel travel, enabling softer spring designs for better ride comfort; it supports diverse automotive performance designs; and it has a smaller sprung mass, improving tire contact with the road. However, independent suspension has drawbacks such as complex structure, high cost, and inconvenient maintenance. Classification of independent suspension: Most modern passenger cars use independent suspension, which can be further divided into types such as swing-arm, trailing-arm, multi-link, strut, and MacPherson suspensions based on their structural forms. Among these, MacPherson and multi-link suspensions are more common due to their relatively low cost and excellent performance in safety, handling, and comfort.
I've been using independent suspension for several years, and it truly makes driving more comfortable. Each wheel is independently mounted to the car body, with a spring and shock absorber in between – one absorbs impacts while the other controls movement speed. Structurally, it mainly relies on arms for connection, like control arms that fix positions while allowing wheels to move freely up and down. This way, when hitting bumps, jolts on one side won't affect the other, significantly reducing cabin sway. A stabilizer bar is also added to prevent body roll during turns. During inspections, check for broken springs or leaking shock absorbers – simple maintenance can extend its lifespan. It handles curves better than non-independent suspension, providing stable driving suitable for various road conditions, especially mixed urban and highway routes.
