What is the role of planetary gear mechanism in automatic transmission?

Planetary gear mechanism in automatic transmission plays the role of changing the transmission ratio and direction. The planetary gear mechanism consists of sun gear, ring gear, planet carrier, and planetary gears. By using clutches and brakes to alter the relative motion relationships among the components in the planetary gear mechanism, different gear ratios are achieved for various transmission speeds. Planetary gears refer to a gear system that not only rotates around its own axis like fixed-axis gears, but also has its axis of rotation moving around other gears' axes along with the planet carrier. The rotation around its own axis is called rotation, while the rotation around other gears' axes is called revolution.
