What is the role of antioxidants in engine oil?
1 Answers
The role of antioxidants in engine oil is to prevent oxidation and deterioration, thereby extending the service life of the engine oil. Most engine oils contain antioxidants. If the engine oil undergoes oxidation and deterioration, its lubricating performance will decrease, leading to increased engine wear. During normal engine operation, the high temperatures inside the engine can easily trigger certain chemical reactions. Therefore, antioxidants are added to the engine oil to prevent oxidation and deterioration. Even with antioxidants, prolonged use without changing the engine oil can still lead to oxidation and deterioration. Antioxidants can only slow down the oxidation rate of the engine oil but cannot completely prevent it. Therefore, car owners should regularly change the engine oil during routine vehicle use.
