GAC Trumpchi and GAC Toyota both belong to the GAC Group. However, GAC Trumpchi and GAC Toyota are not the same manufacturer. GAC Toyota is a joint venture between GAC Group and Japan's Toyota, while GAC Trumpchi is a self-developed brand by GAC Group. GAC Trumpchi (abbreviated as Trumpchi) was established in December 2010 as a domestic brand created by GAC Group to enhance its core competitiveness and achieve sustainable development, targeting the mid-to-high-end market. In December 2010, the first model, the Trumpchi GA5 sedan, was successfully launched, followed by the introduction of multiple other models. GAC Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. (GACTOYOTA) was established on September 1, 2004, as a 50-50 joint venture between GAC Group Co., Ltd. and Japan's Toyota Motor Corporation, with a cooperation period of 30 years. The company is located in Nansha District, Guangzhou, the geometric center of China's dynamic Pearl River Delta, covering an area of 1.87 million square meters with a building area of 400,000 square meters and an initial production capacity of 200,000 vehicles per year.

GAC Trumpchi is actually the homegrown brand of GAC Group, entirely developed independently in China, primarily promoting domestic models like the GS4. On the other hand, GAC Toyota is a joint venture between GAC and Japan's Toyota, manufacturing Toyota-branded vehicles such as the Corolla. Both operate under the umbrella of GAC Group and may collaborate on production bases and parts supply, but they follow different brand strategies—Trumpchi focuses more on localized designs, while the Toyota joint venture adheres to global standards. I see their relationship as two teams within one family, each carving out their market, with a strong parent backing them. Over the past decade, China's auto industry has grown rapidly, and GAC has steadily progressed from learning through partnerships to independent R&D. Today, both brands enjoy strong market popularity.

From an ordinary car enthusiast's perspective, here's how I see it. GAC Trumpchi is GAC's own independent brand, launching models with Chinese aesthetics, and the Trumpchi Empow is quite fun to drive. GAC Toyota, on the other hand, is a joint venture between GAC and Toyota, mainly promoting Toyota models like the Levin. Both fall under the GAC Group umbrella—one like a biological child, the other an adopted cooperative child, possibly sharing resources like factories and technology, but with distinctly different styles—Trumpchi being more down-to-earth, while the Toyota joint venture focuses more on reputation. For us buyers, choosing Trumpchi means saving money and practicality, while opting for the Toyota joint venture offers peace of mind and reliability, each with its own merits. Now, when it comes to new energy vehicles, Trumpchi is pushing plug-in hybrids, and the Toyota joint venture is also accelerating its electric steps. It feels like the GAC system is playing a pretty balanced game.

Simply put, GAC Trumpchi is a purely domestic brand independently created by GAC Group, producing Chinese-made vehicles like the M8 series. GAC Toyota, on the other hand, is a joint venture between GAC and Japan's Toyota, manufacturing Toyota models. Both operate under the GAC Group umbrella—like siblings with independent brands: Trumpchi focuses on innovation with Chinese elements, while the Toyota joint venture carries global DNA. Behind the scenes, GAC acts as the orchestrator, coordinating resource sharing, such as potential collaboration in procurement. This model is quite common in the auto industry—GAC initially grew through joint ventures before launching its own Trumpchi brand to diversify its lineup. For consumers, having multiple brand options is a win.
