What is the purpose of engine start-stop?

Engine start-stop is achieved by equipping a traditional engine with an enhanced motor that has idle start-stop functionality, allowing the engine to completely shut down when the vehicle meets idle stop conditions. When the vehicle needs to move forward again, the idle start-stop motor system quickly responds to the driver's start command, rapidly restarting the engine, thereby reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. For example, when the vehicle is stationary at a red light or in traffic congestion, the system can automatically stop the engine, while still allowing the use of in-car devices such as air conditioning and audio systems during the stop phase. This technology can save approximately 5% of fuel under normal driving conditions and around 15% in congested traffic.
I've been driving to and from work for several years and find the auto start-stop feature particularly useful. When waiting at red lights or in traffic jams, it automatically shuts off the engine, and restarts quickly and smoothly, saving me a significant amount on fuel costs. On average, it reduces my monthly fuel expenses by several dozen yuan, which adds up to considerable savings over time. Additionally, the cabin becomes much quieter when the engine is off, eliminating the constant humming noise—especially pleasant during summer. Some people worry about faster battery drain, but I haven't experienced any major issues after years of use. Overall, this feature is not only wallet-friendly but also reduces exhaust emissions, contributing slightly to urban environmental protection. I keep it in auto mode while driving and have grown so accustomed to it that I rarely bother turning it off.
