What is the purpose of a high-pressure fuel pump?

High-pressure fuel pumps are only found in engines equipped with direct injection technology. This type of fuel pump can create higher injection pressure, allowing the fuel injector in the cylinder to spray gasoline directly into the combustion chamber. Many engines utilize direct injection technology, including some naturally aspirated engines. In direct injection engines, the fuel injector is located inside the cylinder, and the higher injection pressure ensures thorough atomization of the gasoline. More complete atomization allows the gasoline to mix more thoroughly with air, thereby improving power output and reducing fuel consumption. Generally, direct injection engines deliver stronger performance and lower fuel consumption compared to multi-point fuel injection engines. Some vehicles also feature dual injection systems, combining both direct injection and multi-point fuel injection technologies.
