Automotive disc brakes are braking devices that use stationary brake pads to clamp onto the rotating brake disc attached to the wheel, generating friction to reduce the wheel's rotational speed. The brake system mainly consists of components such as the brake disc, brake caliper, friction pads, wheel cylinder, and brake lines. The relevant details are as follows: Working Principle of Disc Brakes: When the brake pedal is pressed, the piston inside the master cylinder is pushed, creating pressure in the brake hydraulic system. This pressure is transmitted via brake fluid to the pistons in the wheel cylinders of the brake calipers. Upon receiving the pressure, the wheel cylinder pistons move outward, pushing the brake pads to clamp onto the brake disc. This causes friction between the brake pads and the disc, reducing the wheel's speed and thereby slowing or stopping the vehicle.
