Driving a manual transmission car requires a C1 driver's license. C1 is a code for a type of driver's license. According to the "Regulations on the Application and Use of Motor Vehicle Driver's Licenses" (Ministry of Public Security Order No. 123), C1 permits driving small and mini passenger vehicles, light and mini cargo vehicles, as well as light and mini special-purpose vehicles. It also allows driving vehicles covered by C2, C3, and C4 license classes. Common types of driver's licenses are as follows: 1. Class A License: Applicants must be at least 18 years old. This license is suitable for 2-wheel, 3-wheel, and 4-wheel motorcycles. 2. Class A1 License: Applicants must be at least 16 years old. This license is suitable for light motorcycles and also covers Class B1 vehicles. 3. Class B License: Applicants must be at least 18 years old. This license is suitable for vehicles with up to 9 seats (including the driver's seat) and a maximum weight of 3.5 tons (including trailers not exceeding 750 kg). Drivers with at least 2 years of experience can also operate motorcycles with engines up to 125cc and 15 horsepower, as well as 3-wheel and 4-wheel heavy motorcycles. 4. Class B1 License: Applicants must be at least 16 years old. This license is suitable for 3-wheel motorcycles and 4-wheel heavy motorcycles with a power output of up to 15 kW and a weight of up to 550 kg. Class C License: Applicants must be at least 18 years old. This license is suitable for trucks weighing over 3.5 tons with trailers not exceeding 750 kg. This license is valid for 5 years and can be renewed after a medical examination. 5. Class D License: Applicants must be at least 21 years old and hold a Class B license. This license is suitable for passenger vehicles with more than 8 seats (excluding the driver) and trailers not exceeding 750 kg.
When I took my driver's license test before, I chose the manual transmission type. I specifically asked the instructor what category it was, and he directly told me it was C1, which allows driving both manual and automatic cars. At the time, I thought learning manual transmission was quite fun. Shifting gears and pressing the clutch were difficult at first, but once I got the hang of it, the sense of control was amazing. Manual transmission cars are more fuel-efficient, and I often drive my dad’s old manual car to work, feeling more engaged than with an automatic. For a C1 license, you need to practice the basics more during driving school, but once you pass, you’ll feel more confident driving. If you take the C2 test, you can only drive automatics, which is quite limiting. So, for new drivers, the manual transmission license (C1) is the most practical. I suggest you all go for this one to handle various cars flexibly.
