There are 3 colored links on the timing chain. Align the timing mark on the intake side balance shaft sprocket with the copper-plated link. Rotate the timing chain clockwise. Place the timing chain on the water pump drive sprocket. Adjust the next chrome-plated link to align with the timing mark on the exhaust side balance shaft drive sprocket. Install the balance shaft timing chain guide plate and bolts; install the balance shaft timing chain small guide plate and bolts; install the balance shaft timing chain adjustable guide plate and bolts. Rotate the balance shaft timing chain hydraulic tensioner plunger 90 degrees in its hole and compress the plunger, then return the tensioner to its original 12 o'clock position.
When installing the EA888 timing chain, I usually disconnect the battery first to ensure safety, then rotate the crankshaft to position it at the top dead center of the first cylinder, and use a special tool to secure the camshaft to prevent movement. Next, remove the old chain. When installing the new chain, carefully align the marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets—there must be no slightest deviation. After the chain is installed, fit the new tensioner and tighten it with bolts. Manually rotate the engine two full turns to confirm the marks still align, ensuring the chain won’t loosen or skip teeth. Finally, reconnect the battery and start the engine to listen for smooth operation. Remember, keep the process clean and have all tools ready, as even minor mistakes can cause serious engine damage. Regular chain inspections can extend engine life.
