The function of the L gear in an automatic transmission is to lock the transmission in a lower gear to increase torque at the wheels. The L gear is a low-speed gear and can be used when climbing steep slopes, descending steep slopes, or off-roading. Most automatic transmission vehicles have eliminated the 1st gear, and many automatic transmission vehicles are equipped with an M gear, which is the manual mode of the automatic transmission. In special situations, the manual mode can be used directly to control the gear of the transmission. Many drivers use the S gear when overtaking. After shifting into the S gear, the car enters sport mode, where the power becomes stronger, the throttle pedal becomes more responsive, but the fuel consumption of the car also increases. The N gear and P gear are used when parking. After shifting into the P gear, the locking mechanism inside the transmission locks the gears, and the car cannot move without engaging the handbrake.
