When driving, we often notice the button on top of the gear shift lever—this is actually the shift lock release button. Nowadays, almost all automatic transmission vehicles come with this design. The most typical scenario is when the car battery is completely dead or there’s an electrical failure, and the key just won’t turn. Pressing this button allows you to forcibly shift the gear from P (Park) to N (Neutral), making it easier to push the car for rescue or towing. Even in the daily shutdown state, if you want to move the gear, you must press the brake and then this button—this is a safety design to prevent accidental operation. For some models with manual mode, holding this button can also switch driving modes, but this depends on the specific vehicle’s manual.
Veteran drivers remind new car owners not to overlook that small bump button on the gear shift. Those who drive automatics know that without pressing the brake, the gear lever won't budge when shifting—this button, in conjunction with the brake, is the key to unlocking it. Especially during sudden stalls or when towing is needed, it can release the gear lock even without power. Many beginners are unaware of this feature and panic during emergencies. Also, be cautious not to spill drinks into it, as sticky mechanical parts can easily malfunction.
