The function of a half shaft is to transmit the torque from the differential to the wheels, thereby propelling the vehicle forward. Modern vehicles typically use a half-shaft support system, where the half shaft serves as a solid axle that transmits torque between the differential and the drive wheels. Internally, it is connected to the differential side gears via splines. Common types include full-floating half shafts and semi-floating half shafts. Full-floating half shafts are easier to install and remove during use—simply unscrewing the bolts on the flange allows the half shaft to be pulled out, making maintenance and servicing more convenient. Semi-floating half shafts not only transmit torque but also bear all the reaction forces and bending moments generated by the vehicle. They feature a simpler support structure and are commonly used in passenger cars where reaction forces and bending moments are relatively small.
