How a continuously variable transmission works: There are no specific fixed gears. In operation, it is similar to an automatic transmission, but the variation in speed ratio differs from the gear-shifting process of an automatic transmission—it is continuous, thus ensuring sustained and smooth power delivery. Disadvantages of continuously variable transmission: Fatal weakness: "Slippage." In CVT transmissions, the contact area between the transmission mechanism's conical pulley and the belt chain is relatively small and constantly changing, far from being a rigid connection. Although the tension can be increased by tightening the conical pulley to enhance friction, this still cannot address the root cause.
