The function of a central differential is to enhance a vehicle's ability to traverse poor road conditions. Specifically, when one drive axle spins freely, it can quickly lock the differential, turning the two drive axles into a rigid connection. This allows most or even all of the torque to be transferred to the non-slipping drive axle, maximizing its traction and generating sufficient driving force to keep the vehicle moving. Different differentials employ various locking mechanisms, including forced locking, high-friction self-locking, jaw coupling, Torsen, and viscous coupling. Among these, jaw coupling is commonly used in medium and heavy-duty trucks.
I've been driving a 4WD off-road vehicle for several years and found the center differential quite crucial. Simply put, in four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles, it allows the front and rear wheels to rotate at different speeds when turning, preventing skidding or tire wear.
