What is the function of a car clutch?

The main function of a car clutch is to facilitate gear shifting. The following are the related functions: 1. Ensuring smooth starting of the car: Due to the sliding friction phenomenon between the driving part and the driven part of the clutch, the torque transmitted by the clutch can gradually increase from zero, and the driving force of the car also gradually increases, allowing the car to start smoothly. 2. Facilitating gear shifting: During car driving, different transmission gears are frequently used to adapt to changing driving conditions. By using the clutch to temporarily separate the engine and the transmission before shifting gears, the originally engaged pair of gears can be easily separated because the load is removed, and the pressure between the engaging surfaces is greatly reduced. 3. Preventing overload of the transmission system: During emergency braking of the car, the wheels suddenly decelerate sharply, while the transmission system connected to the engine maintains the original speed due to the inertia of rotation. Since the clutch transmits torque through friction, when the load in the transmission system exceeds the torque that the friction can transmit, the driving and driven parts of the clutch will automatically slip, thus preventing overload of the transmission system.
