Function of the water pump: The function of an automotive water pump is to pressurize the coolant, ensuring its circulation within the cooling system. In simpler terms, it continuously circulates water through the radiator and engine block components to carry away heat, preventing the engine from overheating. Working principle of the water pump: The engine drives the water pump bearing and impeller via a pulley. The coolant inside the pump is rotated along with the impeller and, under centrifugal force, is flung toward the edges of the pump housing, generating pressure before exiting through the outlet channel or hose. As the coolant is expelled from the center of the impeller, a low-pressure area is created, drawing coolant from the radiator into the impeller through the inlet hose due to the pressure difference, thus achieving continuous coolant circulation.
The core role of the water pump in a car's cooling system is to circulate coolant, ensuring the engine doesn't overheat. Having driven many cars myself, I deeply understand its importance. In terms of working principle, the water pump is typically belt-driven and connected to the engine's crankshaft. When the engine runs, the impeller rotates rapidly, creating suction to draw coolant from the radiator and then pushing it through water jackets around the engine block and cylinder head, allowing the coolant to absorb heat.
