What is the difference between Mobil Gold and Mobil Silver?

There are several differences between Mobil Silver and Mobil Gold: 1. Different properties: Mobil Gold is Mobil 1 top-tier engine oil with a newer formula, belonging to the 6th generation; Mobil Silver belongs to the 5th generation formula with average performance, significantly inferior to Mobil Gold. 2. Different grades: Mobil Silver has viscosity grades of 5w-30, 5w-40, and 5W-50; Mobil Gold only has one viscosity grade of 0W-40. 3. Different quality: Mobil Gold uses Group IV PAO full synthetic base oil, with better anti-wear protection and low-temperature performance in additive formulation compared to Mobil Silver; many grades of Mobil Silver use MSDW hydroisomerized oil, commonly known as Group III+, which is no longer a true full synthetic engine oil.
I've been repairing cars for over a decade, and the main difference between these two engine oils lies in their base oil formulations. Mobil 1 Gold uses higher-grade fully synthetic base oil, particularly containing PAO components, which provides significantly better low-temperature startup fluidity compared to Mobil 1 Silver. Just two days ago, when servicing a customer's 200,000-km old BMW, the cold-start knocking noise was noticeably reduced after switching to Mobil 1 Gold. The Gold variant also offers more reliable high-temperature protection, maintaining more stable oil pressure during long-distance driving. Packaging-wise, the gold bottle bears 'FS' markings, while the silver one has 'ESP'. In terms of cost-effectiveness, Mobil 1 Silver is sufficient for regular family cars, but for performance vehicles or models frequently driven on highways, it's worth spending extra for Mobil 1 Gold.
