The difference between GLA and GLE lies in their different classes, corresponding to the A-Class and E-Class respectively. The GLA is a product of the transverse engine platform, sharing the same chassis as the A-Class. The GLE, on the other hand, shares its chassis with the E-Class, positioning it at a higher level than both the GLC and GLA. Below are detailed introductions about the Mercedes-Benz GLA: 1. Overview: The Mercedes-Benz GLA is a model that bridges the gap between the new A-Class and the GLA concept car, embodying the characteristics of a crossover vehicle. Its dynamic and stylish design, combined with a simple yet technologically advanced interior and configuration, largely meets consumers' aesthetic expectations for crossover models. 2. Others: Mercedes-Benz offers four power options for the GLA. The engine types include a 1.6T engine and a 2.0T engine. The top speed reaches 248 kilometers per hour. The seating material is genuine leather. The driving method employs the 4Matic four-wheel-drive system. The Mercedes-Benz GLA is built on the MAF platform.

I've always felt that the GLA and GLE are like two brothers with completely different personalities. The GLA is particularly suitable for city driving—its compact size makes parking a breeze, perfect for daily commuters like me. The rear seating space is slightly smaller but adequate, and the interior has that entry-level Mercedes refined feel. On the other hand, the GLE is a complete beast. Sitting inside feels incredibly spacious, especially with the trunk that can easily accommodate my full set of camping gear. On the highway, it drives as steady as a tank, and the sound insulation is noticeably more premium. However, when it comes to fuel consumption, the GLE can drink half a tank more than my GLA, and the price difference of over 200,000 RMB is certainly justified.

When test-driving the GLA two years ago, what impressed me most was how agile it felt, driving like a hot hatch. The 1.3T engine was sufficient for overtaking in the city, with light and precise steering. However, last month when I took my friend's GLE on a long trip, I realized the difference. The 2.0T power reserve was on a completely different level, and the chassis filtered out most bumps. Features like ventilated and massaging seats come standard on the GLE, while they are optional on the GLA. Off-road, the GLE also has air suspension with lift function, whereas the GLA, being positioned as a city SUV, struggles more on rough roads.

These two models are quite different in positioning. The GLA is a compact SUV with a wheelbase under 2.8 meters, making the rear seats a bit cramped for three adults. The GLE jumps directly to the mid-to-large size category, offering ample legroom in the back. The engine configurations differ even more: the GLA typically comes with a 1.3T four-cylinder, while the GLE starts with at least a 2.0T engine featuring 48V mild hybrid technology. In terms of safety features, the GLE adds advanced options like rear side airbags and active steering assist. As for similarities, both carry the family design with nearly identical diamond grilles and waistline treatments.

I was torn between these two models when a car. The GLA starts at around 400,000 RMB, which is quite affordable, but the interior feels a bit plasticky, and you have to pay extra for the Burmester sound system. The GLE starts at over 700,000 RMB and comes standard with leather seats and ambient lighting, plus the dual-screen dashboard is larger. Driving-wise, the GLE feels more solid and composed over speed bumps. The biggest difference is in space—the GLE's trunk can easily fit four suitcases for weekend trips with parents and kids, something the GLA just can't match.

From a design perspective, the GLA takes a youthful approach with its coupe-like silhouette and sporty 19-inch wheels. The GLE embodies classic luxury with its boxy, commanding presence. The newly launched GLE Coupe even features a dramatic fastback design, priced nearly double the GLA. Interior materials differ significantly too—the GLA mostly uses soft-touch plastics on the dashboard, while the GLE upgrades to genuine wood trim. Both share the MBUX infotainment system, but the GLE adds advanced features like augmented reality navigation. As for drawbacks, the GLA's short rear seats aren't ideal for long journeys, while the GLE feels somewhat cumbersome when turning on narrow roads.
