The difference between 4-door 5-seater and 5-door 5-seater is: 1. Different number of doors: 4-door 5-seater has 4 doors; 5-door 5-seater has 5 doors. 2. Different vehicle types: 4-door 5-seater is used for sedans; 5-door 5-seater is used for SUVs. 3. Different body structures: 4-door 5-seater has a three-box body structure; 5-door 5-seater has a two-box body structure. If the seat back can be lifted, it is also counted as a seat, and the other seats are the front driver's seat, front passenger seat, and rear passenger seats. The current vehicle body structure refers to the number of doors and seats. Generally, three-box vehicles have 4 doors, while 5 doors specifically refer to models where the rear tailgate can be opened. Coupe models are also referred to as 5-door vehicles.

The most obvious difference between a 4-door 5-seater and a 5-door 5-seater lies in the trunk opening mechanism. When I helped a friend choose a car last time, we encountered this issue. A 4-door car typically follows sedan design with a separate small trunk lid, making the opening narrow when loading bulky items—even a stroller had to be squeezed in. In contrast, a 5-door car is usually an SUV or hatchback, featuring a large tailgate that lifts along with the rear window, making it effortless to load items like a TV when moving. Both types have five seats, but the 5-door version has a lower trunk floor, making it easier for elderly people to load and unload items. If you frequently travel with pets, the 5-door design allows dogs to jump in and out more conveniently. However, the rear wiper of a 5-door car tends to accumulate dust and requires frequent cleaning, which isn’t as hassle-free as a 4-door sedan.

I struggled with this choice when buying a car. The 4-door 5-seater usually refers to sedans, where the trunk is separate from the rear seats. The 5-door 5-seater refers to hatchbacks or SUVs, where the entire rear can be lifted for loading. The most practical difference lies in functionality: when shopping for furniture at IKEA on weekends, a 4-door car has a longer trunk depth but a smaller opening, requiring disassembling packaging for a single sofa; whereas a 5-door car can simply lift the entire rear hatch, allowing the sofa to be pushed in vertically. For traveling with kids, the 5-door trunk lets you stand and organize baby supplies easily, unlike the 4-door where you have to bend over and half-crawl inside. However, it's worth noting that 5-door cars lose cabin heat faster when opening the trunk in winter.

The key difference lies in the rear door. For 4-door cars like the Corolla, the trunk lid is smaller; whereas 5-door vehicles such as the Honda CR-V feature an integrated liftback design where the rear glass and door are combined. When the rear seats of a hatchback are folded down, they directly connect to the trunk, allowing two adults to sleep inside during camping. Additionally, the tailgate height is well-suited for wheelchair users to board directly from the rear ramp. However, it's worth noting that parking a 5-door car in older residential areas requires more space for door opening, which may increase the risk of scratching neighboring vehicles.
