I've always been fascinated by the history of transportation. The birth of motorcycles dates back to August 29, 1885. German engineer Gottlieb Daimler and his partner Wilhelm Maybach successfully tested a wooden-framed two-wheeler equipped with a single-cylinder four-stroke engine in their workshop in Cannstatt. This little 0.5 horsepower machine could reach a top speed of 12 km/h. Interestingly, it had two small stabilizing wheels installed between the front and rear wheels, looking nothing like modern motorcycles. This primitive mechanical device, called the 'Reitwagen', was actually an experimental prototype Daimler built to test his newly developed gasoline engine. At the time, no one could have imagined that this bulky wooden contraption would pioneer a century-long motorcycle culture. Today, a replica model is preserved in the German Automotive Museum.
