What is Engine Oil?

Engine oil is a substance enhanced with additives in base oil, primarily containing anti-wear additives, detergents, dispersants, and multi-grade viscosity index improvers. Engine oil is used for lubricating internal combustion engines, with its main functions being to reduce friction and wear on moving parts, and to remove sludge (one of the functions of dispersants) and varnish (from detergents) in the engine. Engine oil can consist solely of lubricant base oil without including cleaning oil components, or it can be composed of lubricant base oil plus additives to enhance the oil's detergency, extreme pressure performance, and ability to inhibit corrosion of engine components.
