What is Automotive OBD?

Automotive OBD refers to the On-Board Diagnostics system, primarily used for real-time monitoring of engine operation status and exhaust treatment system performance. The OBD system continuously monitors components such as: EGR valves, engine components, particulate filters, catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, emission control systems, fuel systems, and other related components. When a malfunction occurs, the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or check engine light illuminates, while the powertrain control module (PCM) stores the fault information in memory. Through specific diagnostic procedures, fault codes can be retrieved from the PCM, enabling maintenance personnel to quickly and accurately identify the nature and location of the fault based on the fault code indications.
