What is Automotive Gear Oil?
1 Answers
Automotive gear oil is a high-viscosity lubricant specifically designed to protect power transmission components, typically characterized by a strong sulfur odor. Vehicle gear oils are classified by performance and viscosity. Currently, the most widely adopted standards globally are the American Petroleum Institute (API) performance classification and U.S. military gear oil specifications. Most manual transmission lubricants and differentials use hypoid gear oil. The usage environment for automotive gear oil includes: 1. The viscosity of gear oil should be selected based on external temperature conditions. The selected gear oil must have a viscosity that reaches 150,000 MPa·s at a maximum temperature not exceeding the ambient temperature. 2. In Jiangnan regions and areas where winter temperatures do not drop below -10°C, 90# gear oil can be used year-round. 140# gear oil is only required during exceptionally high temperatures (or for high-power vehicles or diesel vehicles). In Jiangbei regions, 85#~90# gear oil is suitable for year-round use. In areas where temperatures fall below -26°C, 75# gear oil should be used during winter.
