TGI is a direct injection engine, where direct injection refers to the technology of directly injecting fuel into the cylinder to mix with the intake air. Meaning of Direct Injection: It involves installing the fuel injector inside the cylinder to directly inject fuel into the cylinder and mix it with the intake air. The injection pressure is further increased, allowing the fuel to atomize more finely, achieving precise proportional control of fuel injection and mixing with the intake air, while eliminating the drawbacks of external cylinder injection. Advantages of This Technology: Special designs such as the injector position, spray pattern, intake airflow regulation, and piston crown shape enable the fuel-air mixture to be fully and evenly distributed throughout the cylinder, ensuring complete fuel combustion and higher energy conversion efficiency.
TGI is a special engine developed by Volkswagen Group, specifically referring to Turbocharged Gas Injection, which literally means a turbocharged gas injection engine. It uses Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as the primary fuel, combined with turbocharging technology to enhance power and efficiency. Compared to conventional gasoline engines, TGI is cleaner during combustion because natural gas emits fewer harmful gases such as carbon dioxide. The working principle involves natural gas entering the engine from a high-pressure tank, mixing with air after turbocharging, and then igniting to provide sufficient driving force. I have driven a car equipped with this engine and found the acceleration smooth, fuel consumption low, and environmentally friendly, making it suitable for daily commuting. However, it requires supporting natural gas refueling stations, which may be inconvenient in some areas, but in the long run, it is a transitional choice toward sustainable transportation.
