What is a Hatchback?

A hatchback is a type of vehicle where the passenger compartment and the trunk are integrated into a single unit, with the engine independently arranged. This layout increases interior space while correspondingly reducing trunk space. As a result, hatchbacks are commonly used in small and compact cars. The rear of a hatchback features a spacious rear door, providing the vehicle with flexible usage and a wide range of applications. By folding down the rear seats, the hatchback can offer significantly larger cargo space compared to a sedan. The front section of a hatchback is no different from that of a sedan and serves the same purpose. The key difference lies in the extension of the passenger compartment at nearly the same height towards the rear, merging the rear luggage compartment with the passenger compartment, thus reducing it to two compartments: the engine compartment and the passenger compartment. Hatchbacks also have an independent front engine compartment, similar to sedans, ensuring good frontal collision protection performance. Whether standard or short-nosed, hatchbacks meet frontal collision protection requirements.
