What Happens If You Overfill Engine Oil?

Overfilling engine oil can lead to increased fuel consumption, reduced power output, failure to meet environmental standards, shortened oil seal lifespan, and may cause engine oil leaks. The consequences of excessive oil addition are detrimental. Excess oil increases the crankshaft's rotational resistance, reduces engine output power, and the surplus oil may enter the combustion chamber, leading to oil burning, blue smoke emission, and consequently increased fuel consumption. The primary functions of engine oil are to reduce friction and wear between moving parts, remove sludge (one of the dispersant's roles) and varnish (cleaner's role) from the engine, neutralize acids produced from fuel and lubricant oxidation (cleaner's role), improve piston ring sealing, and cool the engine by carrying away heat from moving components.
