What Happens If the Parking Brake Is Not Released?

Not releasing the parking brake increases the vehicle's forward resistance, placing a heavier load on the engine. In severe cases, this can lead to engine overheating. However, many modern cars or models equipped with pneumatic parking brakes will not move if the parking brake is engaged, which serves as a protective mechanism for the vehicle. Symptoms of not releasing the parking brake include intense friction and heat between the rear brake discs and pads, which may produce a burning smell. In severe cases, smoke may emerge from the rear of the vehicle. The parking brake cable can also become stretched, and in extreme situations, the brake caliper may seize, leading to brake fluid leakage, excessively high brake fluid temperature, and reduced braking performance.
