What Happens If the Fuel Filter Is Not Replaced?

If the fuel filter is not replaced, it can become contaminated and may clog, leading to reduced fuel supply pressure and insufficient fuel delivery. This can cause a decrease in engine power, resulting in difficulties starting the engine, rough idling, and poor acceleration. Additionally, a clogged fuel filter can lead to poor fuel atomization, causing an imbalance in the air-fuel mixture ratio. Incomplete combustion can then produce carbon deposits. These carbon deposits can worsen the clogging of the catalytic converter, contaminate the spark plugs and front oxygen sensor, and lead to excessive emissions and other malfunctions. Generally, the fuel filter should be replaced every approximately 40,000 kilometers, though the exact replacement interval depends on the quality of the fuel used. Higher-quality gasoline is cleaner, which can extend the lifespan of the fuel filter. If your car experiences difficulty starting, check the fuel filter first.
